Habit. Annual
or perennial. Culms stature slender to delicate, 20–90 cm tall. Mid-culm
internodes pubescent. Mid-culm nodes pubescent. Leaf-sheaths hairy. Ligule a
fringed membrane, a ciliolate membrane, 1–1.5 mm long, abaxially scaberulous or
abaxially hairy, entire, truncate. Leaf-blades 3–29 cm long, 1–2.2 mm wide.
Leaf-blade surface scabrous, indumented.

Inflorescence.
Inflorescence compound, a panicle. Panicle lanceolate, 4.5–25 cm long.

Spikelets.
Spikelets pedicelled. Fertile spikelets 1-flowered, comprising 1 fertile
floret(s), with a barren rachilla extension, lanceolate, laterally compressed,
4–9.4 mm long.

Glumes. Glumes
similar, thinner than fertile lemma. Lower glume lanceolate or elliptic,
hyaline, keeled, 1-keeled, 1 -nerved. Lower glume apex muticous. Upper glume
lanceolate or elliptic, 4–7.7 mm long, hyaline, keeled, 1-keeled, 1 -nerved.

Florets.
Fertile lemma 4–9 mm long, keeled, 5 -nerved. Lemma apex dentate, awned, 1
-awned. Median (principal) awn subapical, (9–)17–23 mm long overall, with a
twisted column. Lodicules present. Anthers 3. Grain 2.5–3.8 mm long.
