Habit. Annual.
Culms erect, 90–140 cm tall, 2.5–4 mm diam. Mid-culm internodes hollow,
glabrous. Mid-culm nodes glabrous (and often glaucous). Lateral branches
branched (sometimes). Leaf-sheaths hairy. Ligule an eciliate membrane, erose,
truncate. Leaf-blades linear, flat or involute (when dry), 20–35 cm long,
0.35–0.9 mm wide. Leaf-blade surface scabrous (throughout above and below),
indumented.
Inflorescence.
Inflorescence compound, a panicle of racemes. Panicle 45–75 cm long, 2–10 cm
wide.
Spikelets.
Spikelets pedicelled. Fertile spikelets many flowered, with at least 2 fertile
florets (3–4), comprising 3–4 fertile floret(s), with diminished florets at the
apex, elliptic, laterally compressed, 3–3.4 mm long.
Glumes. Lower
glume linear or lanceolate, membranous, keeled, 1-keeled, 1 -nerved. Upper
glume narrowly ovate (to triangular), 1.8–2.4 mm long, membranous, keeled,
1-keeled, 1 -nerved. Upper glume apex mucronate (sometimes shortly).
Florets.
Fertile lemma 2.3–2.7 mm long, 3 -nerved. Lemma surface indumented. Lemma apex
mucronate (sometimes shortly). Lodicules present. Anthers 3. Grain 1.2–1.3 mm
long.
