Habit. Annual.
Culms decumbent, stature slender to delicate, 30–120 cm tall. Leaf-sheaths
hairy. Ligule an eciliate membrane or a fringed membrane, a ciliate membrane,
1–2.5 mm long, lacerate. Leaf-blades flat, 3–26(–35) cm long, 1–14 mm wide.
Leaf-blade surface indumented.
Inflorescence.
Inflorescence compound, a panicle of racemes. Racemes numerous, 60–70,
spreading or erect, flexuous, (2–)3–8(–16) cm long. Central inflorescence axis
8–35 cm long.
Spikelets.
Spikelets sessile. Fertile spikelets many flowered, with at least 2 fertile
florets (2–4), comprising 2–4 fertile floret(s), with diminished florets at the
apex, obovate, laterally compressed, 1.5–3.2 mm long.

Notes.
Diagnostic characters include the long panicle relative to the plant itself,
thin papery hairy blades and sheaths, prominent ligule, subequal glumes long
relative to the spikelet, pubescent lemma and palea, and trigonous grooved grain.
Introduced;
coastal districts and inland areas of NW Qld; native in America in warm-temperate and tropical regions;
introduced to western Africa. A weed of
disturbed places, usually within pastures and crops such as sorghum and sugar-cane.
