Habit. Perennial.
Culms geniculately ascending or decumbent, 10–45 cm tall, wiry. Lateral
branches branched. Leaf-sheaths hairy. Ligule a fringe of hairs or absent.
Leaf-blades ovate, 0.7–2.5 cm long, 2–10 mm wide.

Inflorescence.
Inflorescence compound, a panicle. Panicle ovate, 1–4 cm long, 2.5 cm wide.
Racemes 1–4 cm long.

Spikelets.
Spikelets pedicelled. Fertile spikelets 2-flowered, the lower floret barren
(rarely male), the upper fertile, comprising 1 basal sterile florets,
comprising 1–2 fertile floret(s), without rachilla extension, orbicular, terete
or dorsally compressed, 1–1.2 mm long.

Glumes. Glumes
similar, thinner than fertile lemma. Lower glume oblong, membranous, without
keels, 5(–7) -nerved. Lower glume surface indumented. Upper glume oblong,
0.85–1.1 mm long, membranous, without keels, 5(–7) -nerved. Upper glume surface
indumented. Florets. Basal sterile florets 1, male, with palea. Lemma of
lower sterile floret 100 % of length of spikelet, coriaceous or indurate, 5
-nerved. Fertile florets female.

Fertile lemma 0.7–1 mm
long, without keel. Palea 2 -nerved. Anthers 3.
