Habit.
Perennial. Culms 10–60 cm tall, wiry, 6 -noded. Lateral branches sparsely
branched. Ligule a fringe of hairs. Leaf-blades involute, 1–3 mm wide.
Leaf-blade surface scaberulous, glabrous.

Inflorescence.
Inflorescence solid, a panicle. Panicle linear, (3–)4.5–10 cm long, 1 cm wide.

Spikelets.
Spikelets pedicelled. Fertile spikelets 1 or more flowered, with 1 fertile floret,
comprising 1 fertile floret(s), with diminished florets at the apex, oblong,
laterally compressed, 4–8.2 mm long.

Glumes. Glumes
similar, thinner than fertile lemma. Lower glume lanceolate, membranous,
without keels, 9–11 -nerved. Lower glume surface indumented. Lower glume apex
muticous or mucronate. Upper glume lanceolate, 3.9–8.2 mm long, membranous,
without keels, 7–9 -nerved. Upper glume surface asperulous, indumented.

Florets.
Fertile lemma 2–3.8 mm long, without keel, 9–11 -nerved. Lemma surface indumented.
Lemma apex dentate or lobed, awned, 9 -awned. Median (principal) awn 4.8–9 mm
long overall. Lateral lemma awns present. Lodicules present. Anthers 3. Grain
1–1.9 mm long.

Notes.
Enneapogon virens differs from all other Australian species of Enneapogon
by its characteristic indumentum on the basal lemma, which is short, usually
appressed and distributed over the entire lemma.

Distributed
in eastern Qld and northern N.S.W. In well-drained country above 200 m
altitude, in and to the W of the Great Dividing Ra., in sandy soils, in Eucalyptus
spp. woodlands.
