Habit.
Perennial. Rhizomes present, short. Basal leaf sheaths absent. Culms erect,
1600–2000 cm tall, 75–150 mm diam., woody. Mid-culm internodes hollow,
thick-walled. Mid-culm nodes pubescent. Lateral branches dendroid. Leaves
cauline. Leaf-sheaths hairy. Ligule an eciliate membrane. Leaf-blades
lanceolate or oblong, 15–30 cm long, 25–50 mm wide. Leaf-blade surface
indumented.

Inflorescence compound, a panicle.

Spikelets.
Fertile spikelets 1 or more flowered, with 1 fertile floret (4–6), comprising
4–6 fertile floret(s), with diminished florets at the apex, lanceolate,
laterally compressed, 7–15 mm long.
