Habit.
Perennial. Rhizomes present, short. Culms 20–200 cm tall. Mid-culm nodes
pubescent or glabrous (rarely). Ligule a fringe of hairs. Leaf-blades flat or
convolute, 10–60 cm long, 1–15 mm wide.
Inflorescence.
Inflorescence solid, a panicle. Panicle linear, 3–30 cm long.
Spikelets.
Spikelets 1–3 in the cluster. Involucre composed of bristles. Fertile spikelets
2-flowered, the lower floret barren (rarely male), the upper fertile,
comprising 1 basal sterile florets, comprising 1 fertile floret(s), without
rachilla extension, ovate or orbicular, laterally compressed, 2–3(–4) mm long.

thinner than fertile lemma. Lower glume ovate, membranous, without keels, 5–7
-nerved. Upper glume ovate, membranous, without keels, (5–)7–9(–11) -nerved. Florets.
