Habit.
Perennial. Rhizomes present, short. Basal leaf sheaths present or absent. Culms
400–800 cm tall, 20–30 mm diam., woody. Mid-culm internodes hollow,
thin-walled, pubescent. Lateral branches dendroid. Leaves cauline. Leaf-sheath
auricles present. Ligule a fringed membrane, a ciliate membrane, lacerate.
Leaf-blades linear or lanceolate or ovate, 25–50 cm long, 45–90 mm wide.
Leaf-blade surface glabrous.
Inflorescence.
Inflorescence compound, a panicle.
Spikelets.
Fertile spikelets 1 or more flowered, with 1 fertile floret (6), comprising 6
fertile floret(s), without rachilla extension, lanceolate, laterally
compressed, 5–10 mm long.
Glumes. Lower
glume 5–7 -nerved. Upper glume 2.5–3 mm long, 7–9 -nerved.
Florets.
Fertile lemma 5–7 mm long, keeled, 10–14 -nerved. Palea 4–9 -nerved. Lodicules
absent or vestigial. Anthers 6.
