Habit.
Perennial. Culms geniculately ascending or decumbent, stature slender to
delicate, 25–45 cm tall. Ligule a fringed membrane, a ciliolate membrane,
0.4–0.6 mm long. Leaf-blades 2–10 cm long, 1–3 mm wide.
Inflorescence.
Inflorescence compound, a panicle of racemes. Panicle lanceolate, 5–12 cm long,
contracted about primary branches.
Spikelets.
Spikelets pedicelled. Fertile spikelets 2-flowered, the lower floret barren
(rarely male), the upper fertile, comprising 1 basal sterile florets,
comprising 1 fertile floret(s), without rachilla extension, lanceolate or
elliptic, dorsally compressed, 3–4 mm long.
Glumes. Glumes
dissimilar, thinner than fertile lemma. Lower glume oblate, membranous, without
keels, 7–9 -nerved. Upper glume oblong, 1.8–2.2 mm long, membranous, without
keels, 11 -nerved. Florets. Basal sterile florets 1, male or barren,
with palea. Lemma of lower sterile floret 100 % of length of spikelet,
membranous, 7–9 -nerved.
Fertile lemma 2.3–2.4
mm long, without keel. Lemma apex mucronate. Anthers 3.
