Habit.
Perennial. Rhizomes present, elongated. Culms erect or geniculately ascending
or decumbent, 20–95 cm tall, 2–5 -noded. Lateral branches simple. Leaves mostly
basal. Leaf-sheaths retrorsely scabrous, glabrous on surface. Ligule an
eciliate membrane, 1 mm long, truncate. Leaf-blades linear or lanceolate,
2.5–13 cm long, 3–7(–10) mm wide. Leaf-blade surface scaberulous, glabrous.
Inflorescence.
Inflorescence solid, a panicle. Panicle oblong or ovate, 1–6 cm long, 2–4 cm
wide.
Spikelets.
Spikelets sessile or pedicelled. Fertile spikelets 1-flowered, comprising 1
fertile floret(s), with a barren rachilla extension, lanceolate, laterally
compressed, (4.5–)6–7 mm long.
Glumes. Glumes
similar, thinner than fertile lemma. Lower glume lanceolate or ovate,
membranous, keeled, 1-keeled, 1 -nerved. Upper glume lanceolate or ovate, 5–7
mm long, membranous, keeled, 1-keeled, 1 -nerved.
Florets.
Fertile lemma (4–)4.6–6.4(–7) mm long, keeled, 5–7 -nerved. Lemma apex dentate,
awned, 3 -awned. Median (principal) awn subapical or from a sinus, 10–25 mm
long overall. Lateral lemma awns present. Palea 2 -nerved. Anthers 3. Grain
3–3.5 mm long.
