Habit.
Perennial. Rhizomes present, elongated. Culms erect or geniculately ascending,
30–60 cm tall, wiry, 2–4 -noded. Mid-culm nodes glabrous. Lateral branches
simple. Leaf-sheaths hairy. Ligule a fringed membrane, a ciliolate membrane,
0.5–1 mm long. Leaf-blades 6–12 cm long, 2–5 mm wide.
Inflorescence.
Inflorescence subdigitate, with ramose branches. Central inflorescence axis
1.1–1.5 cm long. Rhachis fragile at the nodes.
Spikelets.
Spikelets sessile, 1 in the cluster. Companion spikelets pedicelled, 1 in the
cluster. Companion spikelets represented by single glumes, 12–13 mm long. Fertile
spikelets 2-flowered, the lower floret barren (rarely male), the upper fertile,
comprising 1 basal sterile florets, comprising 1 fertile floret(s), without
rachilla extension, lanceolate or elliptic, dorsally compressed, 8–9 mm long.
Glumes.
Glumes dissimilar, firmer than fertile lemma. Lower glume elliptic, coriaceous,
much thinner on margins, without keels, 13 -nerved. Lower glume surface
glabrous. Upper glume lanceolate, keeled, 1-keeled, 3 -nerved. Florets.
Basal sterile florets 1, barren, without significant palea. Lemma of lower
sterile floret 50 % of length of spikelet, hyaline.
Fertile lemma 4 mm
long, without keel. Lemma apex lobed, awned, 1 -awned. Median (principal) awn
from a sinus, 20–25 mm long overall, with a twisted column. Palea apex erose.
Anthers 3. Grain 3 mm long.
