Habit.
Perennial. Culms erect, 80–110 cm tall, 4–6 -noded. Mid-culm nodes pubescent.
Leaf-blades 12–20 cm long, 1–2 mm wide.

Inflorescence.
Inflorescence digitate, with ramose branches. Rhachis fragile at the nodes.

Spikelets.
Spikelets sessile, 1 in the cluster. Companion spikelets pedicelled, 1 in the
cluster. Companion spikelets developed, male with a few bisexual, 5.5 mm long.
Companion spikelet glumes muticous or awned. Fertile spikelets 2-flowered, the
lower floret barren (rarely male), the upper fertile, comprising 1 basal
sterile florets, comprising 1 fertile floret(s), without rachilla extension,
lanceolate, dorsally compressed, 7–8 mm long.

Glumes. Glumes
dissimilar, firmer than fertile lemma, shiny. Lower glume lanceolate,
coriaceous, keeled, 2-keeled, winged on keel, winged narrowly, 11 -nerved.
Upper glume lanceolate, 5 mm long (without awn), chartaceous, keeled
(obscurely), 1-keeled, 5 -nerved. Upper glume apex awned. Florets. Basal
sterile florets 1, barren, with palea. Lemma of lower sterile floret 80 % of
length of spikelet, membranous, 3 -nerved.

Fertile lemma 5.5 mm
long, without keel, 3 -nerved. Lemma apex lobed, awned, 1 -awned. Median (principal)
awn from a sinus, 10 mm long overall, with a twisted column.
