Habit. Annual.
Culms erect, 9–18 cm tall. Mid-culm nodes pubescent. Lateral branches simple.
Leaf-sheaths hairy. Ligule an eciliate membrane, 0.3–0.5 mm long. Leaf-blades
lanceolate, 1–3 cm long, 1–2 mm wide. Leaf-blade surface smooth, indumented.

Inflorescence.
Inflorescence digitate, with spicate branches.

Spikelets.
Spikelets pedicelled. Fertile spikelets 2-flowered, the lower floret barren
(rarely male), the upper fertile, comprising 1 fertile floret(s), without
rachilla extension, elliptic, laterally compressed, 3.5–4 mm long.

Glumes. Glumes
dissimilar. Lower glume lanceolate, coriaceous, firmer on margins, keeled,
1-keeled, 1 -nerved. Upper glume lanceolate, membranous, keeled, 1-keeled, 1
-nerved. Florets. Basal sterile florets 1, barren, without significant
palea. Lemma of lower sterile floret hyaline.

Fertile lemma 0.8 mm
long, without keel, 1 -nerved. Lemma apex dentate or lobed, awned. Median
(principal) awn from a sinus, 8–10 mm long overall, with a twisted column.
Column 3.5–4 mm long. Palea absent. Anthers 2.
